About Lake McConaughy

Lake McConaughy—affectionately known as “Big Mac”—is a beloved destination for Nebraskans and visitors from neighboring states, thanks to its smooth white sand beaches and striking blue waters. Located about 9 miles north of Ogallala near Highways 26 and 61, this expansive reservoir on the North Platte River was originally built for irrigation and later adapted for hydroelectric power. Formed by Kingsley Dam between 1936 and 1941, the lake spans up to 4 miles wide, stretches 22 miles long, and boasts 76 miles of shoreline with depths reaching 145 feet near the dam. Its water source comes primarily from the North Platte River and snowmelt from Wyoming’s mountains.

Water exits Lake McConaughy through the Morning Glory Tower, flowing into the adjacent Lake Ogallala—a smaller, serene body of water known for excellent fishing and peaceful camping.

Today, Lake McConaughy is a thriving hub for outdoor recreation. Visitors enjoy boating, jet skiing, tubing, wakeboarding, fishing, hunting, bird watching, and sand sculpting. It’s also a favorite among sailing enthusiasts, offering ideal conditions for hobie cat sailing, hydrofoiling, kite surfing, parasailing, and countless other water-based adventures.

We discovered “Big Mac” over 35 years ago—and we’ve been hooked ever since. Our kids grew up as sand babies, and now we get to watch them share the lake with their own friends. It’s more than a destination—it’s part of our family’s story.
